What to expect with an 8-9 month old baby

With improved motor skills and a growing sense of independence it’s time to have some fun with your baby

Play time

After months of lying sedately on a play mat, things are about to get a bit more interesting as your baby starts to enjoy small periods of play. Interactive toys are great to introduce at this age – babies love buttons to push, flaps to lift up and lights or noises that they can turn on and off. As they get more control over their hands, you might find their favorite game is picking up objects and throwing them back down. And repeat. Again, and again. This game works equally well with food being thrown off a highchair tray… you have been warned.

On the move

From bum shuffling and commando-style creeping across the floor, to full on crawling and everything in between, you might find your baby starts to move around this time. Whichever method they choose, make sure you give them lots of praise and encouragement. Just make sure you put any valuables out of reach. And don’t panic if your baby isn’t showing any signs of crawling yet, enjoy still having them in one place for a while longer.

Feeding

With increased motor skills, your little one might start to want to self-feed. Introduce a variety of finger foods for them to pick up and experiment with like sticks of carrot and cucumber. Not everything will hit the target, but they’ll love being able to grab what they want. Likewise, your baby might now be able to hold their own bottle or sippy cup too.

Communication

Although your little one is probably still babbling and cooing, they might start understanding a few words including their own name. They’ll also start to recognize basic instructions like ‘no’ but it’s a good idea not to overuse this one and save it for when they’re doing something that’s potentially dangerous, so it has more impact.

How are you feeling?

If you’re thinking about returning to work, it can bring up a lot of emotions especially if you need to introduce some childcare. It might take time for you both to get used to a new routine, but your baby will adapt to the new situation probably quicker than you will! Talk to other moms that have been through it and book a meeting with your boss to discuss any flexible working opportunities there might be.
