What to expect with a 34-36 month old toddler

Now your toddler is reaching the three-year milestone, they’re not looking so little anymore. Here’s what to expect and what to look out for

Motoring along

Is your little one hard to keep up with? Now they’re mobile and gaining their independence, they’re no doubt pushing the boundaries of what they can get away with. They may be able to stand on one foot, walk in a (relatively) straight line and draw some simple shapes (although don’t expect a family portrait just yet). Now they’re able to, they may want to start choosing their outfit or help make their breakfast, so encourage them to get involved and give them small jobs to let them experiment with their freedom.

Social skills

At the three-year mark, you may start to see your toddler move away from playing on their own, and around other children, to playing with other toddlers. This is a hugely exciting milestone as they develop more meaningful relationships and, importantly, start sharing toys. It’s a vital lesson for them to learn but it may not come easy, especially if they’re not used to sharing with siblings or cousins.

Talk the talk

Three years in and your little one is on their way to becoming a chatterbox. They’ll probably now have around 300 words in their vocabulary, but they’ll understand a whole lot more. At this age their brain is a sponge – they’re curious, questioning and will absorb everything around them. Those simple sentences may be turning into more and more questions and while it may get a little tiring after the fifth ‘But why?’ it’s only because they’re eager to learn about the world around them – be patient and re-learn about the world with them.

How are you feeling?

Here comes the hard part – by the time they’re three, if they’re not already on their way to kindergarten, you may want to start thinking about your options. A new routine, along with saying goodbye to your little one can be a tough process for many parents, especially if your toddler is scared or upset at leaving you. Try and stay strong and with time, they’ll follow your lead. Your job as a parent doesn’t end when they start school, they’ll always need you.
