What to expect with a 16-18 month old baby

Your toddler is getting more grown up every day and you’ll love to see all their new-found skills. But they’ll still need lots of cuddles and reassurance to give them the confidence to keep on exploring.

Watch out!

Your toddler is probably getting more confident on two feet now but that doesn’t mean they’ve totally mastered the art of walking. Don’t be surprised to find your little one back down on their bottom after taking a tumble and expect a few bumps and grazes along the way. Carrying a basic first aid kit with you when you’re out is a good idea and don’t let them toddle off too far – at this age they have no sense of danger and don’t yet know what they can and can’t do.

Blissful bedtime routine

As your toddler explores and discovers, they will need the comfort of familiar things more than ever, especially when they’re tired. A relaxing bath, favorite book and a cup of milk are the perfect way to get your little one in the mood for sleeping. If they haven’t got one already a soft toy or small blanket can act as a comforter – just make sure you buy at least two of whatever becomes their beloved in case one gets thrown out of the buggy…

Cute conversations

Your toddler might now be able to put two words together to form a short sentence and should have a vocabulary of up to 20 simple words. This makes it easier for them to tell you what they want, but they might still get frustrated if you don’t understand what they’re trying to say. Keep talking to them and encourage them to answer back as much as possible.

Separation anxiety (again)

With a growing sense of who they are (your toddler can now recognize themselves in a mirror) will come the realization that you are not part of them and that you sometimes leave – if only for a few seconds. So, don’t be surprised if your once confident toddler suddenly bursts into floods of tears each time you exit a room. But don’t worry, you won’t be stuck going to the toilet with a toddler attached to your hip forever. This phase will pass as soon as they’re old enough to understand you always come back. In the meantime, offer lots of hugs and reassurance to help them through this daunting phase.

How are you feeling?

Now you have a proper toddler on your hands, could it be time to think about another baby? This can bring up lots of emotions from remembering the relentless morning sickness or those seemingly endless sleepless nights. Talking it through with your partner is the best way to work out if you’re both ready for this next step.
