As hard as we try to keep our little ones safe, we know that we can’t keep them wrapped in cotton wool forever. Accidents do happen, especially as they start to explore the world around them, so it’s important that you and your first aid kit are prepared for any scenario. We’ve put together a list of suggestions that you might want to consider – all approved by our Nahdi pharmacist
- The first aid box: First things first, you’ll need somewhere to store it all, so choose a waterproof box, with a zip or lock to keep it safe and out of reach of little hands.
- Antiseptic cream or lotion: To help prevent infection in cuts and scrapes. You may also choose to add a calamine lotion to soothe irritation, rashes and sunburn.
- Digital thermometer: We recommend keeping a digital thermometer in your first aid kit to give you an accurate reading when your baby is unwell.
- Antiseptic wipes: For cleaning cuts and wounds before dressing. Remove all dirt before using a plaster or bandage.
- Scissors: For cutting fabric bandages and plasters to size. They’re also useful for cutting clothes if needed.
- Fabric dressing strips & bandage: For dressing wounds. Don’t forget to add some safety pins or adhesive tape to fasten them in place.
- Plasters: Make sure you have a range of sizes and shapes for every type of injury.
- Pain relief: Check that you have the right medicine and dose for their age before using.
- Call sheet: Put together a list of who to call in an emergency, with addresses and contact details including your nearest doctor or hospital. Add yours and your partner’s details for times when someone else is looking after your baby.
- Prescribed medication: If you or your baby take any prescribed medication for asthma or any allergies, keep this safely stored in your first aid kit, along with any instructions for use.
TIP: Once you’ve got your first aid kit for home sorted, make a smaller, condensed version to keep with you when you’re out and about.
Remember to keep your first-aid kit and its contents out of reach of your baby, and keep all your medicines up to date. Make sure you remove any medicine once it passes its use-by date.
