How To Mix Formula Milk For Your Baby

  1. Prepare the bottles

Before you make the formula milk, you’ll need to make sure you have some sterilized bottles ready. First, wash them with hot soapy water to remove any milk residue, using a bottlebrush to get into the teat. You can then sterilize through cold water sterilizing, placing them in boiling water, microwaving or using a steam sterilizer. Whichever method you choose, make sure you follow the instructions closely. Sterilize a few bottles at a time so you have enough ready for the day.

  1. Use boiled water

Fill the bottle with freshly boiled tap water to kill off any bacteria – always add the formula to the water, not the other way around. Follow the instructions on your pack of formula so you use the right amount for your baby’s age. Let the water cool to room temperature before adding the formula. If you’re in any doubt, test a bit on the inside of your wrist.

  1. Adding the formula milk

Always measure out the milk using the scoop that came with the formula to give you exactly the right amount. Fill the scoop right up to the top and then level it off with a knife. Don’t be tempted to add extra scoops to the mixture, as adding too much formula can cause constipation or dehydration.

  1. Shake it up

Screw the teat back on and secure the lid. It’s a good idea to check the formula package again in case there are any specific instructions on how to shake the bottle, but generally it’s best to give it a gentle shake until the powder has mixed fully with the water. Don’t shake too vigorously as this can cause air bubbles that might give your baby wind.

  1. Leftovers

Once your little one has finished feeding, throw any leftover formula milk away. If you make up a bottle and you don’t end up using it, throw it away after two hours. The best way to minimize the risk of infection is to make up each bottle as you need it. It might take a bit of time to get used to the process, but you’ll be a pro in no time.
