How to maintain a routine with a baby

When you have a little one in the family, they somehow end up the boss of you. Your everyday routine completely changes to fit around their schedule. But as well as all the feeds and changes, you also feel you have to find time for housework, seeing family and looking after yourself. It can be hard to fit it all in.

Try our lifestyle tips and advice to keep your routine running smoothly.

Keep on top of chores by:

  • Only doing what’s essential. Having a baby changes your priorities, so it’s okay if the house gets a little messy. Frankly, if you manage to get dressed you’re doing well. Spend your downtime sleeping and recovering not tidying.

  • Using a baby carrier. Wearing your baby in a sling or carrier keeps them close and leaves you with your hands free to do some light housework – scratch that – to eat something. If you are cleaning, be careful not to spray any chemicals near your baby.

  • Letting others help. Split household tasks with your partner to ease the load. Accept all offers of help from family and friends who might offer to cook for you or help with laundry. Resist asking them to stay for dinner.

A healthy routine for you:

  • Get outside. Getting out of the house for a change of scenery can be good for your wellbeing. Look out for local mom and baby classes. Your new best friend awaits.

  • Don’t expect perfection. From holidays to guests visiting, there are always occasions that might disrupt your baby’s routine. While consistency is important for routine, the occasional break won’t set you back. Life must go on.

  • Make time for you. A happy mom means a happy baby, so it’s important you look after your wellbeing too. Make time for healthy meals, and let your partner look after the baby (NB remember to tell him it is not ‘babysitting’ when it is your own child) while you take some much-needed time for yourself – even if that only means having a shower in peace.
