How to deal with bumps, scratches and bruises

However thoroughly you baby- and toddler-proof your home, you can’t keep them wrapped in cotton wool forever, so it’s important you know how to handle those inevitable scrapes and scratches.

Step 1: Be prepared

Keep these items in your first-aid kit:

  • Antiseptic wipes – for cleaning wounds before dressing them
  • Band-Aids – keep some fun, child-friendly designs to hand to distract your little one
  • Pain relief – for those bad bumps, a little medicine may be needed. Check the label first and make sure you use the right dose for their age
  • Cream or lotion – scratches and scrapes may need some soothing lotion to help them heal

Step 2: Keep calm

Easier said than done, right? Tripping over and bumping into things is all part of the process as your little one starts to learn about spatial awareness and how their body moves. If and when they do fall, try and remain calm. They’ll follow your cues so if you appear panicked and upset, they’re more likely to cry too. Reassure them that they’ll be fine and they’ll soon be up on their feet again.

Step 3:

For bumps and bruises

If they’ve got a raised bump on the skin, don’t panic. Wrap some ice in a thin towel and hold it against the bump for 10-15 minutes (never put ice directly on their skin). Elevate the bruised area as this will help reduce swelling and increase blood flow. Reapply ice every one to two hours if needed and let them rest – it will heal in time.

For cuts and scratches

Wash your hands first, then gently wash the wound with a clean cloth or flannel. Don’t worry if it starts bleeding again, this can help to flush out dirt and grit to stop it getting infected. Just clean the wound again and pat it dry. Avoid the temptation to blow on the wound as this can encourage germs to grow and spread. Apply an antiseptic lotion and cover the wound with a Band-Aid or bandage. Change the dressing often and be patient – deep scratches can take a while to heal.

Step 4: A little love

It may seem obvious, but a cuddle from mommy or daddy and a kiss on the bump will do wonders to soothe their tears and put a smile back on their face. Seeing your little one upset is never easy, but a lot of love and reassurance will see them on the road to recovery.

If you’re concerned about certain bumps or bruises, remember to seek medical advice.
