It can be really distressing and frustrating for parents when their baby won’t stop crying. Know that just being there for them is hugely reassuring to your little one, and here are five techniques that might help too
First, check the obvious reasons. Babies will cry to let you know when they’re hungry, tired, over-stimulated, hot, cold, need changing or winding, or when they’re feeling unwell. If you can’t spot an obvious problem and they’re still crying, then try the following tips.
- Cuddle them – just being there for them is very important. Skin-on-skin touching and hearing your voice will help them feel secure and safe.
- Do what comes naturally – calming a baby is something built in to humans. Universal soothing behaviors include rocking, cuddling, singing and making shushing sounds, which remind your baby of being in the womb.
- Keep them snug – young babies may feel more secure when they’re wrapped or ‘swaddled’ in material. Use a light fabric to make sure they don’t get too hot.
- Go for a ride – the rhythmic sounds and motion of the car can help soothe some babies. Pop them in their car seat and take a drive.
- Try a comforter – if your baby cries every time you’re out of sight, leave them with an item of clothing or muslin that smells of you. Your familiar scent will help them feel secure.
If you’re worried about your baby and they are crying inconsolably, take them to your doctor to rule out any underlying medical issues. Constant crying can leave you feeling overwhelmed and upset, so ask for support and talk to your partner and friends if you feel like you can’t cope.
